Background

In 2013, a conversation between Arno Schwarz, chairman of the history association of St. Georgen at that time, and Werner Fuchs, chief of the fire brigade, about the events of the the great town fire 1865 which destroyed the majority of the town St. Georgen. This catastrophe was due its 150. Anniversary on the 15th September 2015 and both men agreed that this dramatic event had to be captured and preserved for the generations to come.

Arno Schwarz was thinking about ways to preserve the history of the town in a more modern and engaging way for a long time and saw his chance to transform his intentions into reality by making old documentations into film scenes and showcase them in a permanent exhibition. All research was there in form of old documents and protocols, but how could these documents be translated into film? His first point of call was Ute Scholz, representative of the theatre in St. Georgen, who he asked for a possible collaboration. Ute was instantly inspired by his idea and suggested Stephanie Kiewel and Finn Drude as collaboration partners, two fellow citizen and former members of the theatre association, who both moved to England to study Film and TV Production at the University of Cumbria.

The two students both saw a chance in realising a big production and returning the favour to their hometown who supported them in many ways over the years in pursuing their careers.

FUNKENFLUG was born, a community project with a very small budget, mainly funded through donations from associations of St. Georgen and the tireless help of hundreds of professional and unprofessional volunteers of all sectors and age groups.

On 19th September 1865, an innocent fight between two brothers led to one of the biggest town fires of the area that destroyed most of St. Georgen, a small town in the heart of the Black Forest in Germany.

Based on original recordings, FUNKENFLUG serves as an outstanding example of solidarity with a town facing its biggest catastrophe in history and citizens regaining strength and courage to rebuild the town to the important centre of the

Black Forest it is today.

FUNKENFLUG is the result of two dedicated students pulling together a whole region to make a piece of history come alive on an international scale. Despite a very minimal budget, the production value of the film is stunning. The actors were all locals who never acted before and the crew was a mixture of a small group of students from Cumbria combined with voluntary helpers from the area in Germany.

The director  and her team proof a very high level of dedication, working on a bilingual project of such big size spread over two countries for over two years. Funkenflug is one of its kind and probably the first film of this scale produced by an entirely non-professional crew. Due to the way Funkenflug was financed and managed, this film could be an example of how to preserve history for future generations in an exciting way on a low budget.
